This article gives advice to individuals looking to buy thoughtful housewarming gifts for friends and family, including great ideas for unique gifts to buy.
Following the Norm
When it comes to buying housewarming gifts, they are a little bit like weddings. It is typical to buy something “homely” that you feel that the person moving in will need. Such an attitude then sees you heading down to the store and buying such original and inspirational things like toasters, kettles, and a super pack of Tefal or celebrity chef branded pots and pans. So you follow the norm and then find out that, lo and behold, the people moving already had those basic essentials.
The message people, if you have not detected a healthy dose of ire and sarcasm yet, is that there is more to buying housewarming gifts than simply sticking to the tried and trusted methods. Of course, if the people moving home have asked for specific items or you know they need them, then fair enough. Reckless buying will just see them with lots of credit vouchers, asking for gift receipts, or selling a lot of kitchenware on eBay.
The Path to Take
So, what are you going to buy instead of the traditional “favourites” and usual housewarming gifts.
Leave the toasters and kettles behind and think a lot wider in terms of the home. Have you noticed that the gifts we have mentioned thus far are all related to the kitchen? Certainly worth getting away from if you are buying for women, they may think you are having a laugh!
At the same time, you are not going to shell out on a plasma HD television, unless you are exceptionally well off yourself and can afford such extravagant gifts for other people!
Gift Ideas
First of all, think bathroom, and whether you are buying for man, woman, couple or family, everyone loves to indulge themselves and relax while taking a bath at the end of a long day. Go for luxurious items such as bath salts or even quality soap – moving home is stressful and your gift will be very much appreciated, I’m sure!
Another irritation of moving home is the having to do the giant first shop. First night of moving in often means eating pizza or another takeaway. As a thoughtful housewarming gift, why not put together a hamper of organic foods and sauces, even a simple selection such as pasta, bread, tomato sauce and a spread or jam is enough for an evening meal and breakfast, and will save them a fortune.
Unless they didn’t get or don’t have a toaster and pans, but it’s the thought that counts!
